Nutrient excretion from cattle grazing nitrogen‐fertilized grass or grass–legume pastures

چکیده

Nutrient cycling via livestock excreta is an important grassland ecosystem service. This study was conducted in 2016 and 2017 determined nutrient excretion from cattle grazing three systems: (a) N-fertilized bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flüggé) overseeded with rye (Secale cereale L.) oat (Avena sativa during winter (Grass+N), (b) unfertilized rye–oat–clover (Trifolium sp.) mixture (Grass+clover), (c) rhizoma peanut (Arachis glabrata Benth.)–bahiagrass a (Grass+CL+RP). Urinary volume excreted the warm season ranged 122 to 182 L ha−1d−1, more than double that cool (56–70 ha−1 d−1). N concentration greater Grass+CL+RP compared Grass+N (4.4 vs. 3.1 g kg−1, respectively). In addition, fecal dry matter organic output for steers (3.8 3.2 2.8 2.2 kg hd−1 d−1, Total annual feces concentrations of P, K, Mg, were system. The introduction legumes increased proportion returning urine. However, when summed across seasons, total (feces urine) (89 71 yr−1), mainly due stocking rate former. Grass–legume systems receiving 34 yr−1 recycled 80% grass system 224 yr−1, indicating potential forage add grasslands.

Impacts of Rotational Grazing on Soil Carbon in Native Grass-Based Pastures in Southern Australia

Rotational grazing management strategies have been promoted as a way to improve the sustainability of native grass-based pasture systems. From disturbance ecology theory, rotational grazing relative to continuous grazing can increase pasture productivity by allowing vegetation to recover after short intense grazing periods. This project sought to assess whether soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks ...

Grazing behavior and energy expenditure by sheep and goats co-grazing grass/forb pastures at three stocking rates

A study was conducted to assess effects of stocking rate (SR) on grazing behavior and energy expenditure (EE) by growing sheep and goat wethers co-grazing grass/forb pastures. Grazing was for 16-week periods in 2002 and 2003. Pastures consisted of various grasses, primarily bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) and johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense), and forbs (e.g., ragweed; Ambrosia spp.). Sheep (Kha...

Influence of Improved Pastures and Grazing Animals on Nutrient Cycling within New Zealand Soils

The improvement of New Zealands pastures over the last ISO years has increased the nutrient status of the soil as a result of the application of fertiliser, an increased soil organic matter content and increased biological activity. The grazing animal has also influenced the nutrient status of the soil by increasing the rate at which nutrients cycle between the soil, plants and animals. However...

Spatial occupancy patterns and activity of arid rangeland cattle grazing small riparian pastures.

The spatial occupancy patterns and activity of cattle grazing three riparian pastures was investigated in northeastern Oregon using Global Positioning System (GPS) collars logging at 1-sec intervals. Cattle consistently selected plant communities as grazing areas that had forage in sufficient volume to meet their requirements and favored communities as resting areas that were dry and open. Catt...
